KHS:
The 2024/2025 Field Trip to Rutgers Newark!
On November 21st, the Planet Earth class made their 4th annual field trip to the Earth and Space Science Department at Rutgers Newark University. The class learned about a research project testing particulates in the air around Newark Airport, the NJ Turnpike and the port. Students participated in a brainstorming activity with the Newark Geoscience Ecosystem Department. They identified and addressed issues that affect urban ecosystems. A favorite with everyone this year was the Greenhouse in Plant Sciences, where students were introduced to aromatic plants, succulents, and carnivorous plants. We topped off the day with the annual Oil Game, where students learned about finding oil and gas, and what oil companies have to do to make a profit. Two teams tied with a $28 million dollar profit each. Once again, Rutgers welcomed us and provided us with both an educational and an entertaining day.

š America Recycles Day is November 15, and small actions lead to big impacts! Each year, millions join in to spread awareness of how recycling reduces waste, saves energy, and conserves valuable resources.
The KHS SAVE Club is aiming to collect 1,000 pounds of plastic film to recycle through TREX, a company that transforms plastic waste into outdoor furniture. If we reach our goal by the end of the school year, TREX will gift us a bench made from recycled plastic for our school grounds. So far, weāve saved 208 pounds of plastic from ending up in landfills!
You can help by dropping off items like plastic bags labeled with a 2 or a 4, Amazon packaging, bread/produce bags, and ice bags into the GREEN recycling bins in the main office, counseling, security desk, or any science classroom. Letās āTurn that stench into a bench!ā

Kearny High Schoolās ceramics class collaborated with Franklin Preschool classes for the second year in a row. Preschoolers in Ms. Murray, Ms. Bauer, and Ms. Kearns' classes drew monster designs, which Ms. Donnellyās ceramics students brought to life in clay. On October 30th, high schoolers delivered each preschoolerās monster and read How to Catch a Monster. Mrs. Astrella and Ms. Donnelly led a fun sticker monster activity, and preschoolers enjoyed a gallery walk before taking their clay monsters home!

As we get ready for Election Day, the Pre-K students at Franklin read āDuck For Presidentā and voted!š³ļø Each student received a ballot to vote for Duckš¦ or Farmer BrownšØāš¾. On Friday, we will count all the votes from all the preschool classes and see who wins!š
