J-LEAP Director Visits Kearny High School
The Japanese program at Kearny High School was selected as a recipient of the prestigious J-LEAP grant, (Japanese Language Education Assistance Program) for the 2024-2026 school years. J-LEAP. For the next two years, we will have the pleasure of hosting visiting teacher Kanaho Mochida Sensei from Hiroshima, Japan. She will team teach all Japanese classes with our resident Japanese teacher, Seth Davis Sensei. Students are participating in exciting cultural lessons and activities, while learning Japanese in a near-immersion classroom setting. Mochida Sensei began her teaching term at Kearny High School in September and has become an immediate hit with students. She is the third J-LEAP teacher to serve at Kearny High School. In addition, the J- LEAP grant provides extensive Japanese language teaching workshops and a materials stipend of $1000 for each year of participation in the program. J-LEAP is entirely sponsored by the Japanese government to support Japanese language education in the United States and to help train a new generation of language teachers.
In the picture, Ms. Ann Jordan, Teaching Director of J-LEAP visits KHS on October 16, 2024 to observe Japanese classes and to present the J-LEAP award placard to Mr. Curtis Brack, the Principal at Kearny High School along with our Japanese teachers Seth Davis Sensei, and Kanaho Mochida Sensei.

The Army has completed their fall events here at KHS and will be joining us in the spring too. We had some great presentations with our junior and senior students. Several representatives shared with them what the Army can offer for future opportunities. Last week the Army joined us again for our annual fall field day, which included a variety of activities such as football throwing, soccer shootout, varying fitness challenges, boxing station, weight lifting challenge and a variety of giveaways for all these challenges. The students were engaged and are looking forward to the Army's visit in the spring.

On October 4th; Ms. Flock, Mrs. Bruno, Mr. Morgan, and Ms. Barbagallo, took their Supernatural senior classes on a field trip to AMC Theatres. By watching "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice", students were able to discover Tim Burton's narrative perspective on the afterlife, and different styles of storytelling.
